What to See in Magome-juku

Walking up the Magome-juku hill, you will see a huge waterwheel in front of a Japanese building. This is the famous watermill with a history of over 150 years, marking the southern defense border of Magome-juku. The twists and steep turns of the road indeed advantageously contribute to the defensive scheme.

Shimizuya Museum, once the home of the former official of the Magong Suju, inspired the famous Japanese writer Toson Shimazaki on one of his work. Today, the museum displays handwritten letters from Toson Shimazaki, scrolls of paintings, calligraphy, and photographs, important documents from the Edo period, and ceramics such as Kutani, Imari, Karatsu. You can fully explore and learn about the ancient culture of Magome-juku in the museum.

Toson Memorial Museum is located at the center of Magome-juku. Magome is the hometown of Toson Shimazaki, a famous Japanese writer of naturalism. Toson Memorial Museum is therefore constructed to commemorate Toson Shimazaki. The memorial hall maintained most of the original structure of Shimazaki family's house, including the hallways, walls, and stairs. The museum also displays many of Toson Shimazaki's belongings. The museum is closed on December every year.



Manpukuan Eisyouji is located north of Toson Memorial Museum passing the stone paved road. This neighborhood is not only where the famous writer Shimazaki Toson spent his childhood but also the cemetery of the Shimazaki family. Some of the temples in Japan offer vegetarian meal, and Manpukuan Eisyouji is one of them. Restricting to vegetarian meal is a crucial practice in Buddhism. Manpukuan Eisyouji also provides accommodation in addition to vegetarian dinner, but advance reservation is required. There is a pond in the garden, where visitors can admire flowers at different seasons.

Continue walking from Magome Waki-Honjin Museum, you can reach the Observation Deck, where you can overlook Mount Ena. Along the Magome Pass for 3 hours, you can arrive at Tsumago-juku. This is a route favored by many hikers, and they can see a waterfall, called Otaki and Metaki Falls, with a height of 10 meters.
